Watch the Sunset from the Eiffel Tower
Built as the entrance to the 1889 World’s Fair, this wrought iron, lattice tower was not intended to be permanent. Initially, some of France’s leading artists and intellectuals criticized its design. In 1909, the tower was saved from demolition when it was repurposed as a giant, radio antenna. The Eiffel Tower, nicknamed The Iron Lady, has become a global, cultural icon and is one of the most recognizable structures in the world.
