Watch Baby Sea Turtles Hatching
If you want to celebrate World Sea Turtle Day on June 16th, visit Tobago, one of the world’s premier, turtle watching destinations. You will spot turtles year round while you are snorkeling, diving or strolling along the beaches. January through September is the nesting season when the turtles come ashore and lay their eggs in the sand. The peak months for turtle nesting and hatching are May and June. After 60 days buried in the sand, the baby sea turtles will hatch and crawl to the surface and make a dash for the ocean.
There are strict guidelines for watching the turtles nest such as absolute silence and no lights because most of the nesting occurs at night. Only about one in 1,000 baby turtles survive to be adults. All of the turtles on this island are endangered and there are many local, conservation projects to protect them.
