Waitomo Glow Worm Caves
Discover Mother Nature’s hidden, light display as you climb inside your tour boat and drift silently through a massive grotto of glowworms. While inside the cave, notice how brightly these creatures are glowing. The more intense the light, the hungrier they are! These tiny, luminescent creatures are unique to New Zealand.
Tane Tinorau, a Maori chief, was one of the original explorers of the caves. In 1889, the caves were opened to tourists. Many of the tour guides today are direct descendants of the Maori chief and his wife Huti who owned the land where the caves were discovered. Today’s guides bring the cave’s history and legends to life with their famous story-telling skills. Experience one of New Zealand’s most unique, natural attractions.
