The Village of Monsanto
This small is like no place you have ever seen on earth. Built on a mountain, its structures are sandwiched between giant boulders, making the city look like it is carved out of stone. In 1939, it received the distinction of being “The Most Portuguese Town in Portugal”. The buildings incorporate Romanesque and Manueline styles, while still being innovative and unique. Many of the mossy boulders are fitted with doors that lead to homes carved right into the rock. The village hasn’t changed for hundreds of years and when you arrive, it’s like walking into a museum.
