The Viking City of Birka
Dating back to the 750s, Birka is regarded as Sweden’s first city. The Viking City of Birka is situated on the island of Björkö in Lake Mälaren. It was one of the most important trading centers for Vikings. There are still visible traces of the people who were born and who lived and died there.
Today, Birka is one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites and a visit to Birka is like travelling back in time. You can stroll through the cultural landscape, tour the archaeological fields and visit the Birka Museum. You can also visit the reconstructed Viking village with its forges and weaving cabins. There are daily guided tours and the guides will introduce you to life in the Viking era.
