In 1980, Kevin Hillier tried out his new metal detector in his tiny hometown of Wedderburn, Australia. Instead of detecting bottle caps, jewelry or coins, he found a 61 pound golden nugget, only 12 inches below the ground surface. It is the biggest gold nugget in existence. After a flurry of news reports and an exciting press conference, Kevin sold it to the Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas for over a million dollars.
