Ride in Megavalanche
Zoom down an Alpine slope in Megavalanche. This big cycling event of the year in France takes place high up in the French Alps and sees thousands of riders hurtling down the slopes at breakneck speeds.
Imagine nearly 2,000 thrill seeking, adrenaline junkies on mountain bikes perched at the edge of a black diamond ski run, waiting for the start of one of the most dangerous races to begin. As the horn sounds, they all take off in a rush as they descend 3,000 metres through the mountains. Riders crash into each other, causing massive pile-ups of bikes and bodies.
The first quarter of a mile is more sliding than riding, as riders use their feet to balance as they fly at high speeds down the mountain. The UCC Megavalanche is one of the longest and steepest downhill races in the world and can cause serious injury to those participating.
