Drowned Village of Vilarinho da Firna
When the hydroelectric dam was completed, the Portuguese Electricity Company paid off the 300 residents in the town to relocate so the company could flood the area. Then, the 2,000 year old village that was built by the Romans in the 1st Century, was submerged under water. During the summer months, it emerges from the water and this part of ancient history reappears when the dam’s reservoir water levels are lower. Explore the walls of this once prosperous village from a glass-bottom boat that will take you to see the remains of this lost city.
