Discover the Shipwrecked Sailors’ Messages
Learn more about the shipwrecked victims and stranded sailors and their importance to the island’s history. They carved their names, dates and designs in the boulders on this formerly, deserted island. Most of the carvings on Sapodilla Hill, date back to the mid 1700s and the early 1800s. Some messages carved in the chalk-like rocks have detailed etchings outlining their sad tales of desperation. The Turks and Caicos Museum has relocated some of the carvings to their museum to protect these historical markers from theft and destruction.
