Color by Numbers

Color by Numbers

There are many cities with color changing lights on towers and buildings but the Color by Numbers is the only one in the world that can be changed by anyone using a phone. Installed in 2006, this permanent, multi-colored installation uses the windows in the upper portion of the 20-story spire in the tower at Telefonplan in Stockholm to project whatever color is ordered by people using a smartphone app or calling a free number (020-720-200) using a mobile phone and keypad. The call is free and is limited to five minutes. While standing on site or using a streaming webcam, amateur painters of light who want to make their temporary mark on the Stockholm skyline can choose which floor they would like to color and then create a custom color. This unique project was the brainchild of an artist, an interaction designer and an architect and was created to represent democracy and the power of the public.
